Who are Lincoln Cannons?

Did you know one of the most vibrant sports clubs in the area meet every Thursday night just down the road at Cherry Willingham Community School?

Lincoln Cannons Volleyball Club re-located to Cherry from their original Lincoln College home a couple of years ago and have gone from strength to strength since then under head coach Navaz Sutton. With four teams ranging from local (Cannons & Deans) to regional (Lynx & Leopards) league standard we are able to provide competition for beginners through to advanced junior and adult players.

In the past the club has hosted JDP (Junior Development Programme) and FGP (Freestyle Grand Prix), which is a junior (Under-17) league. This year we will be holding regular junior sessions on Saturday mornings for young people to learn some basic skills and get involved in volleyball. Cannons recently regained their Lincolnshire League title, in what was a double-winning season as they also lifted the Cup (a feat they last achieved in 2009-10), while the Lynx men’s side finished runners-up in the East Midlands League Division One, with the Leopards also enjoying a fine campaign in the East Midlands Women’s League.

We also send teams to tournaments around the country, including the Bridlington Beach Tournament, York Volleyfest, the Cambridge Grass Tournament and RAF Festival of Volleyball.

The club has had some young players represented on the international stage, while teenage star Aaron Hoodless was named Lincolnshire Young Sports Personality of the Year in 2011. More recently, Alex Hutchinson, one of the clubs junior players, who has progressed through the club and now plays for England cadets.

While this all makes the club sound very professional, we welcome anyone with an interest in the sport regardless of ability, so if you fancy getting involved, come down to Cherry on a Thursday training night and see what we are all about.

The success of London 2012 Olympics saw a boost in our membership numbers, but we always welcome new players, young and old, and we have some great coaches who will guide you through every step of the way.
